How long does it take for a modern watch to become a classic?
Maybe not that long with these three.
The Precursor
Three examples of modern watches with the potential to become classics. With two Limited Editions and one Japan-exclusive release, their distinct looks give all three watches a great chance of becoming collectors’ favourites in the future.
Seiko SARY159 “Honeycomb Cocktail”
If Seiko employees spend so much time in your bar they might eventually let you design a watch. That’s the story behind the most recent “Cocktail” series at least! Hisashi Kishi, owner of the “Star Bar”, which is located a stone’s throw away from Seiko’s Ginza HQ, was asked to help design watch dials based on his favourite cocktails. Many were created, but very few are as sought after as the SARY159 “Honeycomb”. Its open heart design, which is often seen as a controversial dial addition, is beloved in this piece and rightly so in my opinion. It just somehow works perfectly with the textured hexagons. Comes with the full box and papers. Discontinued and limited to 6000 pieces (this is #0177/6000).
SARX059 “Shippo Enamel”
A hand-glazed Shippo Enamel dial, made by a single Master Craftsman in Japan. In 2018, enamel glazing master, Wataru Totani, worked with Seiko to produce 2500 SARX059 dials. Each limited edition dial was hand-glazed, polished and inspected by Totani, resulting in a truly special, deep blue dial that is said to represent the sea surrounding Japan. The indices and minute markers are identical to Seiko’s 1895 “Time Keeper Pocket Watch”, which adds the cultural heritage of the watch design. Comes with the full box and papers. Discontinued and limited to 2500 pieces (this is #0461/2500). Serviced by Seiko Japan in 2024.
Seiko SARC007 “Kit Kat”
Impressive “Kit Kat” indices and etched sub-dials make this a visually impactful watch. Not only does it look the part, but this 2007 Japan-exclusive release has a 6R20 “Hi-Beat” movement, with 29 Jewels, circular day & date windows, and a Power Reserve Indicator. To me, it’s everything that a JDM release should be; interesting, slightly strange, and punching well above its weight in terms of pricing.
